Travelling to Mexico

Planning in advance the appropriate wardrobe for the destination, the climate and the time of year will make your life easier once you are here. It is easy to find laundries and dry cleaning services in Mexico. If traveling with school-age children, it is important to consider that there are school uniforms for certain specific climates and each educational institution has its own dress rules.

Personal luggage

You are allowed to carry, tax-free, certain items in your personal luggage when entering the country. Check the list of permitted goods on the SAT (SAT customs authority) website.

Duty-free allowance

It is a tax exemption granted by the Mexican Government to a national or foreign passenger for certain items that the passenger brings to Mexico.

Duty-Free Goods: Travelling either by air or land

$300 USD all year

$500 USD Holiday season

Exemption: You have to declare If you carry more than

USD$10K in cash or cashing receipts.

Cash declaration: Passenger from abroad

You must declare to Mexican Customs if you are traveling with more than $10,000 USD (or its equivalent in other currencies) in any of the following forms: cash, domestic or foreign checks, payment orders or any other document receivable or a combination of the previous ones. You have the obligation to declare it to Mexican Customs through the following means:

  • Customs Declaration for passengers coming from abroad once you enter the country.
  • Customs Declaration upon departure from the country.

When should Goods be declared?

You must file when the value of your assets exceeds your tax exemption. The value of your assets must not exceed $3,000 dollars or its equivalent in Mexican currency.

How do you fill out the declaration?

Arrival in Mexico:

  • Plane or ship: you will have to fill out the "Customs Declaration for Foreign Passengers" form at the port of entry.
  • Bus: You must go to the designated checkpoint at the border and fill out the "Customs Declaration for passengers from abroad" form.

Goods that you cannot bring to Mexico

These goods are prohibited or controlled, it is not allowed:

  • Narcotics
  • Live fish or predatory species of any size
  • Images of any kind that depict children in a degrading or ridiculous manner, or in an attitude that incites violence or destruction.
  • Clothing or footwear that is not part of your personal luggage.
  • Weapons and ammunition
