Emergency in an earthquake
What to do during an earthquake?
The alerta sísmica (seismic alert or public siren) can give seconds of warning for you to evacuate a building. If you hear the seismic alert, stay calm. If you are on ground floor and whenever possible, evacuate the building and follow the evacuation routes.
What to do indoors when an earthquake starts?
- Get down to the floor and against an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms in case you are not near a strong table or desk,
- Avoid windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall furniture, large appliances, and cabinets filled with heavy objects.
- Do not run out of the structure during the shaking.
- Stay away from glass buildings.
- If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow.
- Do not use elevators.
- If you use a wheelchair, lock the wheels, and cover your head.
What to do outdoors when an earthquake starts?
- Move to a clear area.
- Avoid power lines, buildings, and trees.
- If you’re driving, pull over and stop the vehicle.
