General overview

In Mexico, each state is responsible for its driving regulations, and the issuance of its own driving licenses.

Drivers need to prove they reside in the state in order to obtain that state's license, which will be valid in any other state.

Mexican citizens and legal residents can only acquire a driver’s license once they have turned 18, and it is usually valid for 3 years.

Minors under 16 years of age or older can get a driving permit valid from 1–6 months to 2 years, with the consent of the parents or legal guardian.

A license from a foreign country can be valid up to 3 months in Mexico. The possibility to use it for a longer period is up to the transit officer’s discretion. However, the recommendation is to obtain a Mexican driver’s license after the 3-month period.

Foreign nationals need the following documentation in order to obtain a driver’s license in Mexico:

  • Valid passport
  • Temporary or Permanent Resident Card or proof of legal residence.
  • Proof of address such as a recent water, electricity, or telephone bill or a receipt of payment of property tax.
