Which is the communication style in Mexico?

The Mexicans’ style of communication isn’t very direct. Mexican people have the tendency to avoid disappointment and probably they will tell people what they want to hear, sometimes agreeing to do something that’s impossible or underplaying project costs. Direct refusals are seen as rude. So, if someone doesn't like an idea, they’ll use a more diplomatic expression such as “let's wait and see” or “let me think about that”.

Mexican Family Values

Family is at the center of the social structure. Especially outside of the main cities, families are typically large, and Mexicans are very conscious of their responsibilities to direct family members and extended family, as they are considered also part of the nuclear family since it provides a sense of stability. Mexican families usually have traditional gender roles.

Hierarchical Society

Mexican society is vertically structured and emphasizes hierarchical relationships.

  • People respect authority and look for guidance.
  • Rank is important, and those above you in rank should always be treated with respect and consideration.
  • Person in charge leads an authoritarian approach to decision-making and problem-solving.

Colonial Towns

Topmost historic, must-visit colonial cities in Mexico:

  • Guanajuato: the opulent mansions and winding streets of this university town squeeze into a picture’s valley.
  • San Miguel de Allende: artsy town of cobblestone streets and lovely stone architecture with many foreign residents
  • Oaxaca: gorgeous southern city with an indigenous flavor and stunning art and artisanry.
  • Zacatecas: the magnificent cathedral in this former silver mining city
  • Mérida: city with stately mansions here never cease to impress.
  • Puebla: dense with restored colonial churches and mansions, sparkling with azulejos
  • Morelia: UNESCO-listed since 1991. Morelia is anchored by what is arguably Mexico’s most spectacular cathedral.
  • San Cristóbal de las Casas: an indigenous highland town with winding cobblestone streets and old churches aplenty.
